Skinnydippers Not Yet Able to Resume Swims
Skinnydippers

Although the Surrey, B.C., Skinnydippers won a Supreme Court decision against the city of Surrey to re-establish their nude swims at the Newton Wave Pool in November, they have not resumed their swims. In a recent interview, Skinnydippers Recreation president Paul Andreassen said, “The city is making it as difficult as possible to get back in.” The Skinnydippers held regular late-night nude swims at the Newton Wave Pool until they were banned after a council vote. Andreassen said the city has set up nine conditions for the group’s return. The Skinnydippers have met all of the conditions except one which prohibits signing up new members poolside. City Drops Obscenity Case
Abercrombie & Fitch

A display ad for clothing brand Abercrombie & Fitch caused a stir in Virginia Beach this month after authorities confiscated two display photos from a clothing store and cited the manager on a misdemeanor obscenity charge. One photograph showed three shirtless young men with one of the men’s upper buttocks showing. The other image was of a woman whose arm covered her naked breast. Police issued the summons after customers at the Lynnhaven Mall complained. The manager of the store was charged because there is no legal way to issue a summons to a corporation under such circumstances. City officials later dropped the charge after it was determined that it would be difficult to meet the standards of the law which states that the display had to “appeal to prurient interests, lack redeeming artistic merit and be offensive to prevailing community standards.” Read more at Obscenity case.

Skinny-Dipping Adds Years to Life

The November 9 AARP Webletter features a segment with writer and radio producer Neenah Ellis about her new book If I Live to Be 100. Ellis traveled the country and interviewed centarians, compiling their stories and secrets of longevity. One of the the people she interviewed was a 109-year-old woman who still rows a boat daily and partially attributes her long and healthy life to skinny-dipping.

What Does AANR Do For Me?
Skinnydippers

Last week, a Cap Wiz informational alert was sent out to over 6,000 AANR members regarding the Skinnydippers, a nudist club in British Columbia. The Skinnydippers regularly rented the Newton Wave Pool, a city indoor water park, for nude swims. After a positive article appeared in the local press followed by complaints, management at the facility cancelled the club’s contract after deciding that being nude at a nude swim was not being “appropriately attired.” The Skinnydippers finally got a judicial review to determine whether the city of Surrey has the right to deny use of the facility because the users are nude.

How does what happens to one nudist club in Canada affect all nudists? The Skinnydippers’ lengthy battle could have far-reaching consequences as to the right to enjoy nude recreation in appropriate settings and embolden those who would like to see that right denied. AANR’s mission is to advocate for nude recreation, and keep its members informed. Read more about the Skinnydippers and how to Save the Wave.

AANR Office: Status of California Clubs

October 26, 2007 By: USAnudist Category: AANR Releases Comments Off

OUR DEEPEST THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS
Go out to our members and clubs located in the areas where fires are currently raging across Southern California . To date, we have the following information:

- Deer Park (Devore) – escaped flames narrowly when a fire on its mountain came as close as the fence line. No actual damage to club grounds or personal injuries that we know of, but a very, very dense cloud of ash and soot looms in the air making it difficult to breathe.

- Sun Island Resort ( El Cajon ) – According to David Landman of nearby DeAnza Springs, Sun Island has escaped damage and personal injury. This is a relief since fire destroyed the property years ago.

- DeAnza Springs Resort (Jacumba) – was at least 65 miles from actual fire, although the club lost telephone service for two days while 911 calls were given top priority.

- Glen Eden Sun Club ( Corona ) – remains okay as long as fire doesn’t climb onto their mountain. However, rescue crews can be seen and heard going up and down the highway at all hours. Asthmatics and others with breathing difficulties are battling the thick soot and ash.

- Olive Dell Ranch ( Colton ) – Reports that the club is fine, albeit with a very, very dense smoke in the air.

- Southern California Naturist Association (Malibu Area) – President Gary Mussel reports that all members appear to be well and have not had major damage to homes, although several had to evacuate for a day or two. Gary says folks have learned how to live without air-conditioning (which draws soot and ash into the home), how to use their stovetop vents to remove bad air, and other tricks of living amidst smoke these days. He also says winds in the area, which have gusted above 100 mph at times, have caused much of the damage sustained in the area.

If anyone receiving this message has more up-to-date information, or information on a club not listed here, please let Carolyn Hawkins know with an email to pubaffairs@aanr.com .
