Although the Surrey, B.C., Skinnydippers won a Supreme Court decision against the city of Surrey to re-establish their nude swims at the Newton Wave Pool in November, they have not resumed their swims. In a recent interview, Skinnydippers Recreation president Paul Andreassen said, “The city is making it as difficult as possible to get back in.” The Skinnydippers held regular late-night nude swims at the Newton Wave Pool until they were banned after a council vote. Andreassen said the city has set up nine conditions for the group’s return. The Skinnydippers have met all of the conditions except one which prohibits signing up new members poolside. A display ad for clothing brand Abercrombie & Fitch caused a stir in Virginia Beach this month after authorities confiscated two display photos from a clothing store and cited the manager on a misdemeanor obscenity charge. One photograph showed three shirtless young men with one of the men’s upper buttocks showing. The other image was of a woman whose arm covered her naked breast. Police issued the summons after customers at the Lynnhaven Mall complained. The manager of the store was charged because there is no legal way to issue a summons to a corporation under such circumstances. City officials later dropped the charge after it was determined that it would be difficult to meet the standards of the law which states that the display had to “appeal to prurient interests, lack redeeming artistic merit and be offensive to prevailing community standards.” Read more at Obscenity case.
