Key West C/O Beach Action Request

March 08, 2010 By: USAnudist Category: Beaches, Club Activities, Nudist News

Key West C/O Beach Action Request
As previously noted, a Community Workshop will be held in Key West at Old City Hall on March 30, 2010 to discuss the designation of a clothing-optional area at Smathers Beach.  You can show your support two ways:
ATTEND THE MEETING if you are in the area. It is important that as many supporters as possible are in the audience.  Shirley Mason has requested that a Haulover manager and the Haulover lifeguard captain be asked to attend to address any management concerns.
WRITE A LETTER OF SUPPORT
Send a short letter of support for the c/o beach to be read into the minutes.   Address your letter to “The Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners of Key West”
Letters may be sent via email attn: Sue Harrison, Senior Deputy City Clerk, at  Sharriso@keywestcity.com
The c/o beach is being promoted as an economic benefit.  Points that may be included in your letter:
  • that you are interested in tourist destinations with a c/o beach
  • that a c/o beach will make Key West more attractive to you as a vacation destination
  • positive personal experiences with other c/o beaches like Haulover, Gunnison, etc.
As the Key West Citizen noted:

“Many commissioners received e-mailed form letters from right-wing Christian groups who said they would not visit Key West if it had a clothing-optional beach, but it was unclear as to whether any of the organized opposition was from local residents.”
(One such organization was the American Decency Association, prior to the Key West election that brought in a new mayor favorable to a c/o beach- Read its July 2009 post & email campaign)

Note: Request your letter be read into the minutes of the c/o Beach Workshop on March 30th.
Mayor Craig Cates has publicly voiced his support of a c/o beach, but implementation requires the votes of at least 4 commissioners, or 3 commissioners plus the mayor.
We believe we will have a positive vote from Commissioners Johnston and Rossi, and that the Mayor’s support and a good workshop will result in the needed additional vote from at least one other commissioner.  Commissioner Wardlow is the only commissioner on record that he will NOT vote for a clothing-optional beach.

State plans to add sand to eroded Robert Moses beach

February 21, 2010 By: USAnudist Category: Beaches, Nudist Info

February 18, 2010 By BILL BLEYER
The state parks department is arranging to place 200,000 cubic yards of sand on a badly eroded section of beach at Robert Moses State Park so it can be used by the public this summer.

The sand will replenish the beach at Field 5, which has been so badly eroded by storms over the past year that it sometimes disappears at high tide and has been closed off periodically.

The sand has been stockpiled at the west end of the park since it was dredged from Fire Island Inlet in 1994 to clear shoals that were impeding navigation, said Ronald Foley, regional director of the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The agency is seeking bids from contractors to move the sand and hopes to have the work done by the beginning of April.
The sand is expected to create a beach 300 feet out from the dune line from the east end of Field 5 and west almost to Field 4. “Hopefully it will get us through two summers,” said Foley, who added it might take that long for a federal dredging project to be done in the inlet to improve navigation and replenish that beach and nearby beaches. “Ideally we would like to restore the pile when we have a dredging project.”
The agency has a 10-year state Department of Environmental Conservation permit for emergency beach maintenance that was renewed last year.

In the 1980s and early ’90s, the department several times paid for contractors to truck in sand to bolster the beachfront near the park traffic circle when erosion threatened to undermine it, Foley said.

AANR Christmas Message

December 24, 2009 By: USAnudist Category: AANR Releases

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

In the true spirit of Christmas, perhaps there is no better way to celebrate than to look back on the past year with gratitude, despite the challenges we all faced this year. We could not have accomplished what we did without the support of our members who show through their support and volunteerism that their AANR membership truly matters.

Below you will find an excerpt from AANR President John Kinman’s President’s Podium column that sums up 2009 while looking forward to a new year.

“I hope that nudist historians will recognize 2009 as a year when significant things happened which will shape the future for nude recreation. I’ll cite a few examples.

The World Record Skinny-Dip in July was a great success for several reasons. It brought club members together to be part of something that was greater than their own club. Many clubs reported gains in membership from people who reacted to the greatest nudist publicity event ever and found that nudity was comfortable for them. The event was not limited to AANR clubs but included beach groups from Florida to Hawaii to Vancouver, Canada. Our official numbers were well below the number of actual participants because many people were unwilling to sign release forms. I’m told that for 2010 the rules will be relaxed a bit, and I think that the count will be much greater.

Unfortunately, we lost a major club from AANR affiliation after our board suspended their charter over perceived violations of our principles and standards. The club owner chose to terminate the contract rather than to negotiate changes in practices. My article in the October Bulletin which also appeared on our Web site received a record number of responses. The overwhelming majority supported AANR’s stance. My sense is that our members want to maintain a family-friendly environment in AANR clubs.

Also, unfortunately, the California Supreme Court decided that the parks department had the right to ban nudity at San Onofre Beach despite the long-standing Cahill Policy. I don’t see this as an anti-nudity decision by the court but a decision based on specific legal issues. While the agreements were moving forward, your AANR volunteers were meeting with senior parks officials to ensure that nudity would not be banned at other traditional locations. We have received positive assurance from officials and, in a couple of cases, requests from the public to ban nudity at other locations have been refused by parks officials. California parks officials have offered to partner with AANR to make improvements at another nude beach.

Beyond California, your government affairs team has had successful negotiations with parks officials in other states to recognize our rights to enjoy public lands. In fact, we have been successful in having new lands designated as clothing-optional. At the federal level, the Bureau of Land Management has recognized nude recreation as a legitimate user of public lands.

2009 has been a great challenge to all organizations as we dealt with the greatest recession since the 1930s. We lost some members, primarily in clubs, as our members had to make tough economic decisions. But, some good things happened. Mailers to expired members designed by our marketing team brought in renewals far in excess of the cost of the program.

2009 gave us some great challenges. A club choosing a different marketing direction, a threat to close a nude beach, and a terrible economy combined to try to derail us. But, we responded in a way that has galvanized our membership.

AANR will move forward stronger thanks to the challenges that faced us.”

NAC Advisory - San Onofre Beach

September 05, 2009 By: USAnudist Category: TNS NAC Releases

NAC has learned that the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) intends to ignore the law and will begin issuing citations for nudity in the traditional clothing-optional area at San Onofre State Beach, beginning Tuesday, September 8, 2009.

According to DPR, the citations will be issued under Title 14, Section 4322 of the California Code of Regulations. That regulation allows an individual to be charged for nudity in a state park. Conviction under that section is NOT a sex offense.

Paradise Lakes Resigns From AANR

August 22, 2009 By: USAnudist Category: Uncategorized

Paradise Lakes, Pasco County’s original superclub for nudists has always been known for pushing the limits of accepted nudist proctices.  Paradise Lakes has been through several changes in ownership and it seems that with each change, the separation from  real nudism has widened.

While the term “Family-friendly” has been a buzzword recently for traditional nudism, families don’t really have anything to do with acceptable behavior.  Adults have a responsibility to other adults as well as to children.  If a club advocates or even tolerates behavior that is not in line with traditional nudist principles, then it shoul;d no longer represent itself as a nudist endeavor and advertise iself appropriately.

If you want to watch people having sex, then there should be a place for such activity, but don’t sully the reputations of real nudist clubs by claiming these locations are nudist clubs also.

Positive Article about Rock Haven Lodge

August 16, 2009 By: USAnudist Category: Nudist News, Resorts & Clubs, Trips, Reviews & Info

Over the Independence Day weekend, I was priviledged to spend a couple of days at Rock Haven Lodge in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  I had last visited Rock Haven in 1994, and the facilities are even nicer now than on my previous visit.

One word of warning, if you are planning on sleeping in a tent, you will need a free-standing tent and something padded to sleep on.  The topsoil at Rock Haven is only a couple of inches thick over a bed of flat rock.

The following article appears in the Tennessean.
