Erich is out of the office and will give a full report next week.

Clubs Report on Aftermath of Hurricane Ike

From Ellyn Kern: Drakes Ridge received a second blow as a result of Hurricane Ike. An extended region around the Ohio Valley experienced at least six hours of wind gusts up to 80 miles an hour, an unusual situation here. The cleanup from the July storm was not completed, but a crew of members came to help on the weekend after this storm. Power was out for four days and at least another 16 trees were down. Drakes Ridge, however, considers themselves fortunate as opposed to those in Texas , as there was little property damage and no injuries, miraculously, and our grounds are still greatly shaded.

Judge denies nudist visits with grandchildren

A judge denied Suzzane Jonas visits with her granddaughters because she lives in a Pasco County nudist resort.

Judge denies nudist visits with grandchildren

DADE CITY — Suzzane Jonas hoped to begin weekend visits with her two granddaughters after the girls’ mother lost custody. But a Pasco County judge ruled Wednesday against the visitations because they would take place at a nudist resort.

Jonas lives at Lake Como, a nudist resort that is home to around 500 people.

Earlier this year, Jonas got a court order granting her visits with her grandchildren. The children’s mother had lost parental rights because of several arrests and stints in jail.

But a contractor for the Florida Department of Children and Families blocked the visits.

Circuit Judge Linda Babb upheld that decision. She said as long as the state has any involvement in where the girls live and with whom, she could not approve visits to a nudist community.

“As long as the state is involved, most of the placements of children is considered temporary,” said family law attorney Howard Iken.

Iken says in temporary placement cases the courts “have the most discretion possible.” He said judges often rely heavily on the statements of case workers and other interested parties.

Jonas claims the ruling will hurt her granddaughters and she’s considering an appeal. “It’s just not fair to them,” Jonas said outside the Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City.

In the meantime, the girls are living with other family members in Hillsborough County.

SUBJECT: NAC goes back to court over San Onofre
TO     : Naturists and other concerned citizens

Dear Naturist,

As a result of the Naturist Action Committee’s recent victory in court, the traditional clothing-optional portion of San Onofre State Beach remains open for nude use, the Cahill/Harrison Regulation has been recognized as a state regulation, and no citations for mere nudity are being issued at the beach. NAC’s win is significant and meaningful. However, no one should imagine that it’s the last word in this matter.

As NAC has anticipated, the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has filed its intent to appeal the recent Superior Court ruling. NAC has already prepared for the state’s appeal and will meet that challenge in the Appellate Court. The California Attorney General’s office is representing the DPR. To succeed, the AG will have to convince the Appellate Court that Superior Court Judge Sheila Fell “abused her discretion.” That’s a very difficult case to make.
