New York Times Highlights Nude Vacations

Sunday’s Travel section of The New York Times led off with the feature article “No Shoes, No Shirts, No Worries” about the booming nude recreation travel industry. According to statistics cited by travel writer Michelle Higgins, nude vacations have become increasingly upscale events. The three-page spread includes a brief history of the beginning of nudism and how clothing-optional vacations are now considered mainstream and more in demand than ever. The article gives information about AANR clubs such as Avalon in Paw Paw, West Virginia, and Mira Vista Resort in Tucson, Arizona, as well as AANR participating businesses Hidden Beach Resort, Castaways Travel and Bare Necessities Tour & Travel. In Westmore, VT, a clothing-optional beach on Willoughby Lake had been threatened by a petition to ban nudity in that town. However, the petition had to be withdrawn due to improper wording and submission, and is no longer a direct threat. The Westmore Selectboard has decided to hold a moderated public hearing on the issue and receive written public comments, but is not planning any action at this time. Friends of Willoughby, a local users group, has planned specific action steps, including a clean-up of a clothed beach on Willoughby Lake, as a community service and good-faith gesture towards the town.

Desert Shadows Inn has, for several months, been the subject of speculation, since they filed for bankruptcy. Beginning last week, their website has been stating that Desert Shadows is closed and not taking reservations. Fortunately, it has now been announced in the below article that they are re-opening under new ownership as Desert Sun Resort. While some facilities are currently unavailable, things should back to normal soon.

Pasco County, Florida has long been known to nudists as the place to go for nude recreation. Now a group has been formed to enhance the visibility of Pasco as a nudist destination. The Pasco Area Nudist Development Association, or PANDAbare plan on promoting nudism in Pasco through their website and liaison with the local Tourist Development Council.

A new high-end nudist resort is planned for construction on Arcadia, Florida this year. This has recently become a hot topic in the local newspapers. While local sentiment appears to be in favor of, or ambivalent toward the topic, there is always the opportunity for the opposition to gain ground. AANR Loses a Dear Friend and Club Leader

We were very, very saddened to hear about the passing of Chuck Foster, one of the founders of Caliente Resort, on Friday afternoon from complications of an infection.  A celebration of life service is scheduled beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Grace Family Church, located at 5101 Van Dyke Road, Lutz, FL 33558. Battleboro became famous on the web a couple of years ago because local teenagers were hanging around the local parks nude. They were able to accomplish this because there were no State or Local laws prohibiting public nudity.

After these stories broke on the web, suddenly it seemed that every kook in the US was headed there to walk around town nude. The local government avoided taking any action, saying it would become a non-issue as colder weather arrived. Unfortunately, there were several incidents that goaded them into creating a public nudity ordinance. What had been a matter of comfort for a few kids had turned into a freak show of people walking into stores naked. With the arrival of warmer weather, the freaks have returned. Unfortunately, some are exhibitionists who are labeled by the press as nudists.

Some people like to fish, others like to ride bicycles or read books. Dave Armstrong likes to lie out in the sun naked. To Armstrong, 43, sunbathing nude is a hobby. It’s something the Delray Beach resident enjoys and he doesn’t see anything wrong with it.
