Poster Protest
A thousand-year-old Japanese festival will not be allowed to advertise in the East Japan Railway, known as JR East, as it has for decades. Posters for the Somin Festival, a yearly event where nude men gather to pray for good luck, are no longer allowed. According to the Macau Daily Times, a spokesperson for the East Japan Railway said the posters for the millennium-old festival “could constitute sexual harassment” if displayed in public. The city originally brought the poster to JR East late last year and hoped the company would take 600 as they have in the past. After the company asked for changes, the city put white loincloths on all the men who were originally naked. Public nudity has been gradually growing more taboo in Japan but remains popular in bathhouses and hot springs. Read more at Somin Festival.

Playalinda Beachgoers Respond
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Department has been warning beachgoers to keep their clothes on at Florida’s popular Playalinda Beach or face steep fines and possible jail time. The stretch of beach has long been considered clothing-optional. Deputies have boosted their presence at the federal beach to enforce the decade-old county ordinance. Federal park rangers are unable to issue citations for being nude, so complaints are transferred to sheriff’s deputies who are then called to respond. Recent complaints include nude sunbathers sitting too close to the non-nudist side. Nude beachgoers insist they are not at the beach to cause problems, and have reportedly been going to the nude section of Playalinda since World War II. No arrests have been made but it is possible if violations occur, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Hear what the nudists who visit Playalinda have to say. |
