Local nudists discuss their lifestyle

Published Thursday, October 4, 2007.

Those looking to embark on a free-spirited lifestyle should start by simply taking off their clothes.

Dating back to the hippie era of the 1960s, nudism tends to be thought of in a negative light. Americans often associate nudism with sex and think of nudist “colonies” as places for sexual activity. But practicing nudists — or naturists, as some prefer to be called — prefer this all-natural lifestyle for more spiritual and social reasons, not for nudity’s sexual stigma.

Positive exposure helps nudist resort

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (CBC) - P.E.I.’s only nudist resort is reporting its busiest summer ever and the owner credits good reviews in an international guide.

When the Oasis in Cavendish opened four years ago, it was met with controversy.

Some tourist operators in Cavendish complained at a public meeting that it should not be allowed, but the controversy hasn’t kept naturists away.

Owner Gary Lowther said the number of visitors has been increasing every year.

This year, the World Guide to Nude Beaches and Resorts named the Oasis one of the best resorts in the country. Lowther said that exposure helped make this past summer the busiest by far, with a 25 per cent increase in occupancy over last season. “All that helps, too. Anytime you have reviews in any type of magazine or a book, if they’re good, then it certainly helps you out for sure,” he said.

Are these indecent exposure laws a fad or are they here to stay?

I always thought the fashion police were a myth but they seem to be real Richards says.

They are regulating in terms of indecent exposure but seem to be directed at the expression of identity through clothing.” Richards is available to discuss the constitutional issues surrounding these laws. His current comments on the laws follow:

Love Your Body

October 18 is designated as Love Your Body Day, according to the Love Your Body website sponsored by the NOW Foundation. With the tag line “Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror?” the website’s aim is to raise self-esteem, particularly among women and young girls who face a barrage of media messages that their bodies are unacceptable. According to the website, 80% or U.S. women are dissatisfied with their appearance, due in large part to the promotion of impossible standards by the fashion, cosmetics and diet industries. Check out positive and negative ads, view this year’s winning posters or send an e-card to celebrate Love Your Body Day on October 18 at Love Your Body.
