Brattleboro Drops Nudity Ban
In a turnaround, the city of Brattleboro, Vermont, has reversed its anti-nudity stance. A month ago, Brattleboro passed a temporary prohibition on nudity. But on Tuesday, city board members reversed the ban, voting to reject a proposed ordinance that would have made the ban permanent. One board member said that the reversal was all about tolerance.
Brattleboro has traditionally been laid-back in regard to nudity, and skinny-dipping was considered a rite of summer. Yet, the city began discussing a nudity ban last summer after a group of teens took to hanging around a downtown parking lot in the nude. When the temporary ordinance expires next month, public nudity will no longer be illegal. Read more at Brattleboro.
Politics, Religion & Skinny-dipping
The August 20, 2007 issue of Time magazine features an excerpt from the upcoming book The Preacher and the Presidents by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy about evangelist Billy Graham. The book notes that Graham has been a spiritual guide to United States presidents from Truman through the current administration.
Besides interesting insights into U.S. politics and spirituality, the book also reveals that weeks after John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Graham was summoned to Washington by a shaken Lyndon Johnson “to talk, pray and go skinny-dipping in the White House pool.” Read an excerpt at Time.
Your Favorite Nudist Accessory Is . . .
We recently took an informal poll of members’ favorite accessories. Interesting to note, AANR members have a lot of sun sense, because by far the accessory you are never without is high SPF sunscreen, followed by Tilley hats. Other favorites include: sunglasses, ball caps, pareos/sarongs, sandals, towels, tattoos (both henna and permanent), jewelry, reading material, nail polish, moisturizer, iPods, flip flops, umbrella, swim fins, and swim goggles.
Some AANR members’ answers were pretty creative. One couple carries their American Sunbathing Association towel on all their travels and has photos with the towel that date back 25 years. Another member says he brings a copy of the AANR Bulletin with him to his favorite nude beach to educate others about nude recreation. Our poll results show that nudists are creative, fun-loving and have great common sense! For a list of locations where you can wear your favorite accessories, click here.
Heidi Klum a Lifelong Nudist
Supermodel and “Project Runway” host Heidi Klum appears nude in the September issue of In Style magazine. “My parents were very free about nudity, and my husband and I are, too. I think shame is unnecessary. I’d like our three children to feel free and unashamed of whatever body shape they have. People should worry about other things,” Klum tells In Style.
Klum also appears nude in the new ads for Jordache jeans. The brand is making a comeback after being a staple of 1970s fashion. In the new ad, Klum is shot from behind holding equestrian gear, possibly in homage to the company’s controversial 1979 ad. The earlier advertisement showed a topless model–in Jordache jeans–riding through the surf on a horse. The ad was banned by all the major television networks. Read more . . .
